Industry folks say 2 kg is the "psychological line" for commuting: any heavier and people start leaving it at home.
So what does it actually do? According to in-store demos, a good unit cuts the wearer's physical effort by about 39% and average heart rate by 42% when walking or climbing. That's a genuine quality-of-life change for someone with weak legs or lungs. The AI has gotten smart, too — Haier's W3 uses a dual-algorithm system that learns your personal gait the longer you wear it, and it adapts to small, slow "old-person steps" so it doesn't feel jerky. Battery life is practical: one pack covers around 18,000 steps (a couple of hours of continuous walking) and charges over a standard Type-C cable — you can even top it up from a power bank.
The funniest proof of demand is at China's tourist spots. Mount Tai introduced exoskeleton rentals in 2025 at about 80 yuan for three hours. During this year's May holiday, all 500 rental units across three stations were booked out. Scenic areas from the Great Wall to Huangshan now offer the same. There's an honest catch, though. These devices help you *lift your legs* — they don't keep you *balanced*. Users need basic stability, and makers recommend pairing them with a cane if balance is weak. Body-fit is still being refined; current models suit people 1.55–1.9 m tall and under 100 kg, and slimmer older women sometimes don't get a snug fit (Haier says a petite-specific version is coming).
Why should people outside China care? Two reasons. First, an aging population is a global problem, and China is mass-producing an affordable answer at scale. Second, it shows how Chinese consumer tech is shifting from "cheap copy" to "genuinely useful and cheap" — the same manufacturing muscle that built the world's solar panels is now building robotic legs for grandma.
