When people talk about China and clean energy, they usually mention solar panels and wind turbines. But the harder, less glamorous story is the grid — the giant web of wires, substations and software that has to actually move all that green power from where it's made to where it's needed. In 2026, China is rebuilding that grid on a scale and speed almost no other country can match, and it's worth understanding if you care about where the global energy transition is heading.
Here's the starting point. By the end of February 2026, China's combined wind and solar installed capacity hit 1.88 billion kilowatts — up 28.8% year-on-year. Renewable generation passed 4 trillion kilowatt-hours, roughly 40% of the country's total electricity. That's already a lot of clean power flowing through the system every day.
The official plan, the "15th Five-Year Plan" running 2026–2030, is ambitious. And at the July 2026 ACDC conference in Beijing, researchers pushed the frontier further: how to run a grid that's 100% renewable, using AC/DC fusion and power-electronics so the system stays stable even when the sun isn't shining.
You can see the demand side heating up, too. Over this year's Qingming holiday, EV charging within the State Grid and Southern Grid regions rose about 30% year-on-year as families hit the road in electric cars.
